left & right side buttons on IntelliMouse

I noticed my new system the left & right side buttons on my IntelliMouse
(Optical) aren't working in Outlook Express however they work in Firefox and
IE. I installed Microsoft IntelliPoint and configured IntelliPoint 6 for
"enabled program specific settings" and it makes no difference. please
advise
