Leaving Messages on Server

Chuck Tanner

I would like to be able to leave messages on the server after reading them
in Vista Mail. I couldn't find that option in the mail options. Can
someone point me in the right direction? Thanks. I will take posts or
email.

Be advised that at some point you'll exceed the storage limit
on the server, and your ISP will stop accepting new incoming
email for you.

There is also the option to delete after a number of days. Its a very
useful feature so one can redundantly download one's messages onto different
machines, or redownload the messages, should they get lost on the client
machine.

Right. Any advice to leave mail on the server should include
the caveat to use the "remove from server after xx days" option.

I agree.

Not on all machines though. I only have one machine where it deletes from
the server. The others don't have that option checked.

Yes, my traveling machine doesn't delete after 5 days, but it does delete
when deleted from Deleted Items so that I don't have all that spam waiting
for me when I get home.

I hadn't thought about doing it that way.

windows Vista does not have "leave message on server option"
this is what it says
Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) servers hold incoming e‑mail messages until
you check your e‑mail, at which point they're transferred to your computer.
POP3 is the most common account type for personal e‑mail. Messages are
typically deleted from the server when you check your e‑mail.
I looked, searched and was really upset. Is it possible there is another
version of windows vista email that has this feature. This absolutely says
once you check your messages they are kapoot!!!!!!!!

No, Vista does not have that option... it's in Windows Mail, which is
included with Vista.

What program are you reading your email in?

Windows Mail does too have a serring to Leave messages on the server but not
all mail servers allow it.

Select the account and choose Properties.
Go to the Advanced tab.

I am familiar with how to access pop accounts from any microsoft program like
express or windows mail. I have had no problem in the past with express.
With Vista and Windows Mail I have the option checked in Advanced features to
leave a copy of the message on the server. However, everytime I access
Windows Mail it downloads the message and does not leave it on the server. I
have a Gateway and they are supposed to support the operating system but they
dont have an answer other than to re-install windows which I do not want to
do. as anyone seen this issue as well?

Some servers do not allow you to leave a copy on the server for POP3 mail.
The RFQ doesn't say they have to. You might want to see it you can change
the account to an IMAP account.

i know thats not the case here as it works with the old laptop that has
express on it. it seems to be a bug with windows mail.

I have no trouble with WM or WLM leaving messages on the server, with my
Gateway computer.
I access one account from this computer, and from a Gateway laptop, and
always get the same messages.

All of my accounts on all of my machines leave a copy on the server. Two
machines with WinMail, three with OE.
