Duplicating RIS Images

When you are building (Pulling) images for a RIS server
using the riprep.exe.
You are required to build an image to match the HAL of
each Motherboard you are using in your Complex, what makes
it a little time consuming , Plus the problem that not all
the images are Really Identical.
So there is a work around and it is quite simple (We
tested it in Kaplan Medical Center for 5 months till now).

First I will give a simple explanation about all the files
that are involved in the duplication.

1. The riprep.sif \\ Server_name\REMINST\Setup\Applicable
language \Images\Applicable image name\I386
\Templates\Riprep.sif
Include All the Predefined setting and information of
the image itself. In the [OSChooser] section there is a
value of "HalName="
"Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC",
ACPI PIC HAL (Halacpi.dll)
"ACPI Uniprocessor PC", ACPI APIC UP HAL (Halaacpi.dll)
"Standard PC", Non-ACPI PIC HAL (Hal.dll)
The riprep.exe automatically writes the value of the
system that was cloned by using riprep.
2. The imirror.dat \\ Server_name\REMINST\Setup\Applicable
language \Images\Applicable image name\I386\\Mirror1
\IMirror.dat
This file contains information, such as the drive letter,
installation directory, and hardware abstraction layer
(HAL) type, about the system that was cloned by using
riprep.
3. The hal.dll \\ Server_name\REMINST\Setup\Applicable
language \Images\Applicable image name\I386\mirror1
\Userdata\%windir% \System32\hal.dll hardware
abstraction layer (HAL) dynamic-link library file. The HAL
abstracts low-level hardware details from the operating
system and provides a common programming interface to
devices of the same type (such as video adapters). The
system CD contains several Hal files. Setup copies to your
computer the file that fits your hardware configuration
and then renames the file as Hal.dll

So after we got over that all we need to do is to change
the Configuration in those files but first, all the
procedure from the beginning.
1. First install the OS you like Win 2000 Win XP Or
Sever 2000 and all the included software you need in your
site (You will define the standard, which and what program
to install..)
2. Then riprep(Pull) the computer to your RIS
server. if you don't know the HAL for you computer look
in your riprep.sif in the templates directory in
[OSChooser]
"HalName="
3. Then you make a backup of you new directory
(Image) under \Images directory in the RIS server
4. After the backup finished, rename the original
directory to a different name more fitting for the new
HAL (
WinXP.Standard.ACPI WinXP.Standard.APIC)
Then make the changes to the files mentioned before in the
renamed directory to the files that correspond the change
in name and HAL.
1. First change the "Description =" in the riprep.sif
to one more fitting to your new HAL (Now you understand
this alone.) and change the value of the "HalName=" to fit
your new HAL Requirement.
2. Change the IMirror.dat with one the correspond the
HAL you type in "HalName=" (you got Working samples in
the .rar included) but you can also make it for your self
by just installing clean install of the OS you like to
duplicate with the same HAL you like to create and riprep
it to the server than copy the IMirror.dat for the
\mirror1 directory (make sure you are install to small HD
preferred 4.3 GB so later you can install on any HD > 4.3
GB, and the same installation directory (%WinDir%), do
that for every HAL you want to have in your RIS server).
3. And finally changing the hal.dll to the correspond
the HAL you type in "HalName=" and changing his name to
hal.dll and overwriting \\
Server_name\REMINST\Setup\Applicable language
\Images\Applicable image name\I386\mirror1\Userdata\%
windir% \System32\hal.dll (Also included in the .rar) and
can be found in the CD Based directory in the RIS server
under there full name (hal.dll , halacpi.dll, halaacpi.dll)
And . That it, you are a new owner of a duplicate RIS Image
