Leading zero's missing for SSN numbers...

I get a file every month that contains 2500 social security numbers. The
dashes are in the right place but some of the leading zero's are always
missing in that particular column. Instead of trying to add these manually,
is there something I can do instead??

Mickie,

You can format the column for Social Security numbers. Format - Cells - Number tab -
Special, then select Social Security number.

Thanks so much for your quick reply, and I can't figure out if I'm top
posting, or bottom posting....sorry if this is in the wrong place!

I tried your fix numerous times prior to your return email, highlighting the
column, and doing just what you mentioned...can't get it to change. I've
also "unlocked" it on the advance tab (I think that's where it is). I've
even tried doing Date and Text to Columns too....

I don't know what else to try and do??? When I get the file, as I
mentioned, the dashes are already in the correct places, they do that for me
before sending the file over...can you think of anything else???

Top posting is what you did. It's been the norm in these here parts forever. I don't care,
but when someone posts a reply on top, then someone else posts a reply to that reply on the
bottom, you have to jump all over the place and look at all the >>> stuff, and pretty soon,
you need a drink.

What is this file you're getting. Is it already an Excel workbook. A text file? Say
exactly what it is. If it's not a workbook (xls), then how are you getting it into a
worksheet? If it's a text file (txt, csv, etc), then open it in Notepad and tell us what
the social security numbers look like there.

I suspect you have text, not numbers in the SSN column, and finding out why they're text
will be way to the solution.
