lead zeros in zip codes show but will not print

I have set for zip code but when I use the excel list to print labels in
publisher, it drops the lead number in the field if it is a zero. Have tried
zip code settings, special, custom and general. It will not show the zero in
the example when I pick general. It does show as a zip. I tried a new excel
sheet. No luck.

There is a related KB but it is related to word, says something about using
DDE to connect to excel. The steps mentioned are exclusivly meant for the
word application, but if anyone could help us with this DDE setting within
publisher (if there is one) I think it may help.
