Hi

I have a compaq presario 12xl310 laptop. bought in 2001. the LCD
screen has gone bad. only lights up but cannot see anything legible,
only lines etc. can see windows xp running in the background.
connected a second monitor for checking, which runs perfectly in the
safe mode ( the second monitor) but that goes blank in normal mode.
should i replace the lcd. I have removed the screen cover.

there is a noticable crack on the lcd screen when it lights up.

thanx and regards

If an external monitor runs perfectly in safe mode and blanks out in
normal mode, I would suspect a bad video card or corrupt video
drivers. If the LCD is cracked, it may also be defective.

Not necessarily. It's probably simply set to be 'LCD' and not activate the
external monitor in normal mode (which is the normal setting). He should
look at the display settings while in safe mode (yes I know the normal
display 'settings' don't work there) and see if he can find the LCD vs
external monitor setting and set it to 'both'. It could also be in a
separate program specific to that notebook model (my Acer, for example, has
it's own notebook 'settings' program and LCD/monitor control is in that one).
If the LCD is cracked, it may also be defective.

A cracked LCD that also worked would be a rare bird indeed.
