LCD Monitors

I am not a big gamer but I do occasionally play some games like Quake 3 and
Warcraft 3. I'm looking to soon buy a 18" or 19" LCD monitor. I hear that
the LCD's are not as good with games as are the CRT's. But as with
everything some models are better than others. Can someone suggest a LCD
monitor that is decent with games? I have a A-I-W 9600 Pro video card.
Thanks.

Depends on your bank account. I have an LCD and they are fine for
games. mine is not even one of the 16ms rated ones either. The 16ms
rated LCD's cheat by not using 24bit colour. Look for one that is at
least <25ms and has a good contrast ratio 400:1 or 500:1, look at the
LCD you are considering buying from the sides and look to see that the
image doesn't change the too much, some really wash out when looked at
from certain angles. Lot's of good brands to choose from, NEC and
Samsung newer models should make you happy and perform fine in games.
I have Samsung but that's only because it was cheaper than NEC. If
buying now I think I would buy one of the new NEC's. They are very
nice.

I bought an LG Electronics L1811S 18" monitor two weeks ago and I'm
chuffed to bits with it, it's a great quality monitor. I use my PC for
various
purposes but I've had absolutely no problem with games, and I've tested
it extensively for that lately because I bought Call Of Duty last week and
can't leave it alone!

I got it from here:

Thanks a million for the info and suggestions. It's nice to know that the
newer models work fine with games. I guess I was relying on old information.

I recommend the Eizo Flexscan L767 19" LCD. It's one of (if not the) best
19" LCD monitor.

Even if that were true it wouldn't mean that all LCD panels should be
essentially the same. The panels are manufactured to comply with the
specs required by the buyer so there would still be a vast disparity
between the high end models and the cheaper ones.

If you read the reviews that discuss such matters you'll find that the
same LCD panel is often used in different brands of monitor--in such
cases it's the electronics that get the signal from the video port to
the connector on the LCD that are different. I doubt that the LCD
manufacturers make a different design for each customer any more than
Intel makes a different chip design for each customer. The low prices
we are seeing only happen if there are economies of scale taking place,
and having a different design for each customer does not allow such
economies.

I read somewhere that there are only two makers of LCD panels. If this is
true I would be very suspect on dearer models with similar specifications to
cheaper ones. Basically we all wish we could place them side by side and see
them in operation.
If someone else could verify or dismiss this would be great.

Hmmm, so you're saying that two manufacturing sources would result in
just two different (possibly) LCD displays and all the reviews, tests,
evaluations, indicating significant differences in contrast ratio,
brightness, color saturation, color accuracy, viewing angles, etc.,
are simply inaccurate or contrived?

No, I am not saying that. Generally several generations will be in
production and there will also be several product lines aimed at
different market segments. When you see such tests make sure that they
are comparing monitors that not only use the same brand of LCD but also
the same generation and the same performance level. When that is the
case you'll see nearly identical performance in all the areas you
mention.

Owning a Eizo Flexscan L565 17" TFT myself being 'one of the best' i would
have to think twice. My L565 has had to go back to Eizo now 2 times first
time part of the backlight was fading and second time due to having a
complete row of dead pixels :( So i would really have to think long and hard
before i bought a 19" Eizo 8/
