LCD monitor help, please...

I was hoping someone here could help me... I went to the store and did
research to find out about monitors and am wondering:
-- Why in the world is the resolution 1280x1024 (5:4 ratio) standard rather
than 1280x960? (4:3)
-- If I want to run in 1024x768 on a 1280x1024 monitor, every monitor I
tried just stretched it to fill the entire screen. Since the mode is 4:3
and the monitor isn't, this will distort the picture. Are there any monitors
that are smart enough to put thin black bars at the top and bottom and keep
the picture undistorted?
-- It seems that some manufacturers define monitor response time differently
than others, so 8 ms for one means the same as 16 ms for another. How can
I tell? Is there some resource on the web which explains which manufacturers
use misleading response time figures?
-- Every store I looked in had tons of 17 inch monitors and few or no 15 inch
monitors. Are 15 inch monitors uncommon, or is it just a marketing thing
where the stores like to use bigger monitors with their computers?

You need to run the monitor at its native resolution. Both 5:4 and 4:3 are
usually supported by video adapters.
