LCD Display Fonts

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday, I bought a Samsung 906bw LCD monitor (19" Widescreen) from
Circuit City. I played with lots of them there and at its native resolution
of 1440 x 900, the font size seemed so much larger than with XP. All the
monitors at Circuit City were attached to computers running some form of
Vista.

When I got it home, I attached it to my XP home system, and the font is
quite tiny at it's native resolution, and seems much more so than with the
Vista systems at CC which has me a bit disappointed. I assumed it would
look size wise similar on XP.

My question is: does Vista have better font sizing than XP? Or am I
dreaming. I bought it because of how nice the font size was for a large lcd
monitor. Do I need Vista?

Do you have ClearType turned on??
Right clcik an empty spot on
desktop...properties....appearnace..........effects
Or did they use a larger Font Size??

My guess is they cranked the DPI setting on the computers at Circuit
City.

I frequently see that when the native resolution is high.

I've got an 19" LCD with native 1280x1024 resolution. The default DPI
in Windows is 96.

Being that I have less than 20-20 vision, I find it hard to read text
at that resolution, so I change the setting in Windows to increase it
to 100 DPI. I did this previously in XP and I've since done it in
Vista as well.

Try increasing the DPI setting in XP.

1..
Open Display in Control Panel.

2.
On the Settings tab, click Advanced.

3.
On the General tab, in the DPI setting list, click the dots per inch
(dpi) setting you want to use.

4.
If you choose Other in the DPI setting list, you can set custom
options in the Custom DPI Setting dialog box either by selecting one
of the percentage options in the drop-down list or by clicking on the
ruler and dragging the pointer to specify a setting.

5.
Restart your computer when prompted.


Note•
To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance
and Themes, and then click Display.

If you want to increase the size of text on your screen to make it
more readable, use Font size on the Appearance tab in Display
Properties.

The dpi size you specify on the General tab affects all monitors
attached to your computer and all users that log on to the computer.

Is there Clear Type in XP? If so, I didn't know that so, I'd say no. I
don't know if they did at CC. I'm not very familiar with Vista and not sure
where that would be. I was able to see that they had the native resolution
of 1440 x 900.

I have tried that, but I've noticed that some programs don't use the
increased font size and it looks somewhat un-natural. I haven't tried 100
dpi, so I'll give it a try.

I was hoping Vista did a better job with the fonts. I've seen an iMac with
similar resolution/screen size and it seems OS X makes font size more
readable (larger?) while it stays natural looking.
