I am using Outlook 2003 with Word 2003 as my email editor.
When I create a new message I would like to see the layout (Normal,
Web, Print) icons on the status bar.
How can I do this?

I don't think you can...but maybe you already know you can still switch
between view types from the View menu.

Are you using Office 2003 at home also? I don't have the icons on my status
bar in Office 2003.

should be:

from inside of the open message check:
tools-options-view-horizontalscrollbar

Ahh, I thought I had that scroll bar enabled in my setup, and I didn't, which
is why I couldn't see the icons either. Thanks for sharing your solution
with the group.
