hey all,
i want to run a network cable thru my attic in my house from one end of my
house to the other (<100ft). If i want to buy the Cat6 cable will i need any
special equipment as opposed to buying Cat5/5e?

Any other advice before i start my endeavor?

thanks,
rodchar

Hi
Yeah, you have to buy components that are compatible with CAT6.
If you are not experience in crimping Do Not crimp. Buy Keystone jacks and
punch the end of the cables to the keystones.
From the keystones to the computers, or switches, use commercially made
patches.
This page explains the principle, it is Not updated for CAT6 but the
principles are the same.

initially i just want to run a 100ft cable (that's already crimpted) and was
just going to punch small hole in walls and just thread it thru. i'll do the
wall plate and recrimping later. so if i were to just plug directly into
router and network card would cat6 work at all?

i apologize if you answered this in the reply i'm not very saavy when it
comes to network hardware.

Hi
If the cable is straight patch. Yes you can plug CAT6 into an existing
switches, or computers, and it should work as usual.
If it has to be crossover cable and the components are not Auto Sensing, you
need a Crossover CAT5e.
