Large word documents lagging like crazy

It is not the PC's memory that is the major issue but the temporary files
that are paged in and out of memory as you use Word. The larger the file,
the slower the operation. If you turn off background repagination and work
in normal view, you will be able to work faster. You only need to return to
print layout to repaginate the document as it nears completion. I can asure
you that many people work with much larger documents than you envisage. Do
however switch on the option to create a backup file (Tools > options >
save) and save your work often (CTRL+S).

I am currently typing up a large academic paper at the university computer
lab. The document is about 1.5 MB large. I expect the final paper to be about
three times as large. As it is, I currently have to create a small document
and then paste that onto the large document after a day's worth of work. This
is highly inefficient for me. Is there a way to shunt all of the PC's memory
to Word 2003? I imagine I am not the only person out here writing a thesis.
The lab computer has 512MB of memory.
