Large hard disk on small computer.

My daughters Compaq 4850 just had a hard disk crash on
the old 10 gig (or so) drive. I have a 40 gig ide
drive that I'd like to drop in as the primary. Do I
need to take special action to have this machine,
running windows 98se, recognize the drive?

As long as the jumpers are set correctly, plug it in, format and install.

If it can recognize a 10 GB drive (i.e. larger than the 8 GB limit) it should not have any problem recognizing a 40 GB drive. The motherboard might not support a DMA mode fast enough to take advantage of the speed of the 40 GB drive but it will still work.

What about the 32 gig limit? Best thing would be to plug it in and see what size it formats at. If it reports 32gig then it will
need to run some software which most likely can be downloaded from the hdd manufacturers website.

While FAT32 will support the 40GB hard disk size, the *setup* program
will max out at 32GB. However, you can use PartitionMagic to enlarge
the install-time 32GB partition to encompass all 40GB of the hard disk.
Or just make 32GB and 8GB partitions.

I have the HD in my machine, now, so I'll partition it
20/20. That should work great.. Just load all here
software on the C: partition and go from there.

That should make like real simple.

Well, some time ago, I heart somebody saying that when he replaced in his
Compaq computer HDD for newer (bigger, 20GB) one, it just didn't work. The
system showed it as 10GB.
You've bought a system with 10GB, paid for it, so you won't get larged HDD
than 10GB...

(maybe, the HDD was replaced in Compaq service as the old one was faulty)

So get prepared, the new HDD mybe won't work as it is not (c) by Compaq or
will be showing just 10GB.
Also, there could be 32GB barrier (there should be PINs at HDD to set 32GB
limit)

It's very possible that that older computer's motherboard BIOS cannot
recognize a harddrive as large as 40GB. The only way to find out is try it.
