Large Capacity Flash Drives Won't Work

I have a new rig that uses a clean install of XP with all the service packs,
and fully updated. The system works well in all respects except that it
won't play nicely with flash drives. Small capacity drives, say under a
half gig are fine, but from a half gig up to one gig (the largest I have) it
often won't recognize the drive properly, may or may not successfully copy
files to it, and will almost never "let go" of the drive. I have several
flash drives from different manufacturers, so it's not specific to any one
flash drive or brand. Any ideas why this would happen?

I have exactly the same problem. Only I invested in a 2GB SD card before I
realized there was a problem. My notebook is a Dell Inspiron 6000. Dell
refers me to MS to learn how to copy files. I was looking for some software
that would "package" the copy (like Roxio or Nero Burning for CDs) thinking
that maybe relying on the Explorer to do the copy isn't good enough. The
files I am trying to copy are all MP3. I even got an external 5-to-1 USB
flash drive device and had exactly the same problem. Surely that points away
from the hardware being the problem.
