Large Blank Space In Add Or Remove Programs

Kevin

I installed XP SP2. I noticed that in Add or Remove Programs in the Control
Panel, there is now this huge blank space separating about half the listed
programs. I have to scroll down a lot to find the programs at the end of the
blank space. Why is this there, and how can I get rid of it? Thanks.

Have you tried a different sort to see if the blank space is still there?

It has to do with a value for DefaultIcon in the Registry
being set to -1.

I had it happen, somebody here posted the info to edit the
Registry, it fixed it utterly, and I have unfortunately completely lost the
message.

Perhaps they will post it again.

I have the same thing. It occurs after the same entry, no matter which sort
you select.

I figured it was a function of the program, which is Commence RM 3.0. I am
surprised to see someone else with this problem.

It is really an annoying bug in Windows XP, or XP SP2, I don't know which. I
hope there is solution. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

That was used during programming. They (AC) have been knowing about this
for years.(

V Green,

Mostly I see the value reported (in the dozens of threads about this
problem) as "DisplayIcon". You're saying "DefaultIcon". I don't have any
negative numbers with DisplayIcon, but lots of negative numbers following
pathnames with DefaultIcon. Values range from -225 on down. What are the
numeric values at the end of the path name for? And could you confirm which
is it, Default or Display?

Thanks,

Geoff Walker

I found that the problem I had was a negative number in DisplayIcon but it
was for a program which I had already uninstalled. It would appear that the
uninstaller did not do its job properly and left this bit of registry left
over. In my case I removed the negative number and it fixed the problem.

As well as following the information give earlier, I would look carefully
through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Uninstall\{} and see if there are any entries for software you have since
removed but still have an entry. I removed the entire key for the removed
packaged and have noticed no ill effects.

Steve Atkinson.
