Laptop Touch Pad

I have a friend with a laptop (Gateway) and he would like to know if there
is a way to disable the touch pad when he's using the mouse ?? He ends up
touching the pad by accident and causing problem executions.
We live in different states, so I can't access his PC. It's running XP,
so would
there be something in the "setup" to turn off the touch pad ??

Is it in "setup" by selecting "F-2" during boot up, Control Panel, ???
Being in two
different states, I can't be with the guy to show him, so need "step by step"
instructions. Also, just a reminder that I'm talking about his "touch pad"
and not
his "mouse" that he wants to disable.

Mouse and Touchpad are both configured in Control Panel> Mouse.
This is for the 7000 series, but is probably the same. BTW this was copied
from the Gateway web site.

Q: How do I change the touchpad settings on the Gateway 7000 Series
notebook?

A: Follow these steps to change the touchpad settings on the Gateway® 7000
Series notebook.

1.. From the Start menu, click Control Panel. With Control Panel in
Category View, click Printers and Other Hardware.

2.. In the Printers and Other Hardware window, click the Mouse icon.

3.. In the Mouse Properties dialog box, click the Device Settings tab, and
then click Settings.

4.. To modify a touchpad setting, click the + in front of the setting you
want to change, and then modify the setting.

5.. To save changes, click OK.

Hello,

I just purchased an Acer 5004WLMI notebook, and have the same problem. I
want to disable the touchpad, but can't seem to make it stay disabled. I
can't disable it in Device Manager, and when I uninstall, it just reinstalls
the next time I reboot. I tried following your instructions below, but the
Settings box is blanked out. How do I kill this thing???
