My screen has a vertical yellow bar about an inch wide that always appears in
the background on my screen. How do I get rid of it? Thanks.

First, see if the following is relevant:

Remove Common Tasks from Desktop

If not, then:

Visit the support web site of the manufacturer of your
laptop computer and download the latest video adapter
drivers designed for Windows XP and your specific
laptop model.

Before installing them, uninstall the old drivers. In your
Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs applet
and look for your video drivers to uninstall.

After installing a fresh set of drivers, right-click on your
desktop and select Properties > Settings, change the Color
Quality to "Highest (32 bit), then adjust your Screen Resolution
to your liking, then click on Apply.

If installing new video adapter drivers does not solve your problem,
the video adapter itself, or possible the LCD screen, may be defective
and would require replacement performed by the laptop manufacturer's
service department.
