Laptop SATA HDD question

I have a friend that had his laptop HDD crash. I am going to attempt
to
retrieve data from the disk but I am unsure if a Laptop SATA drive can
connect directly to a SATA port (using a cable) to my desktop system
(so
it can act as a data shunt to an EXT HDD). Does anyone know if this
is
possible or if there is a special cable or adapter I need to purchase?
I will be using a WinXP machine as the data transfer machine.

THANKS!

Michael

I THINK it uses standard SATA connectors. If they fit, it will work.

Mike.
