Bobby,

How are the two computers connected? What operating system is each running
(name, version, SP level)?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer to start.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck

Bobby,

Using both WF and SPF is asking for trouble. Work on one at a time, and disable
the other. If you're having trouble pinging each computer from the other (are
you pinging by ip address or name?), that's where I would start anyway.

With WF, just enable the File and Printer Sharing exception, and set the scope
to your subnet. I have no experience with SPF, though if you RTM, you should be
able to get thru it.

Nothing in the ipconfigs or static routes is obvious. However, once you get
connectivity, and file sharing, working, you should enable DHCP on Laptop, to
get gateway and DNS, so you'll have internet service.

Cheers,
Chuck

Hey Bobby - why do you have DHCP not enabled? Also, it looks like you have
different subnet masks.

Tried it with wf only then spf only but no joy, ping with ip is either
unreachable or times out and names are coming up host not found.

I'll try again tomorrow (why do pc probs always keep you up to wee small
hours!)

Thanks again for your time and help chuck, greatly appreciated.

Bobby, if you look at the web site that Carey gave, you'll find that
you can't follow Tip #1. With a single exception, the settings
described in Tip #1 don't exist in Windows XP. For details:

http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

What's more, following that tip wouldn't help, because it has nothing
to do with the problem that you describe.

The "host unreachable" message when pinging another computer indicates
a problem with IP addresses or a problem with the TCP/IP route table
on the computer that's doing the pinging. It means that the computer
doesn't know how to send data to the IP address of the other computer.

Make sure that both computers have IP addresses in the same subnet:

1. If your network has a broadband router, configure both computers to
obtain an IP address automatically. To do that with the Network Setup
Wizard, tell it that the computers connect to the Internet through a
residential gateway.

2. If there's no DHCP server on the network, assign IP addresses
manually. Typical assignments for a home network are:

Computer 1: IP Address 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Computer 2: IP Address 192.168.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0

I notice that the PC has mask of 255.255.0.0 and the laptop has
255.255.255.0. I think things might move along better if they had the
same mask (255.255.255.0). Once that is done, make sure the pc and the
laptop to the same subnet (i.e. both be on 192.168.0.x or
192.169.1.x).

Just curious how these numbers were assigned?
