I have this notebook for 15 months. It come pre-installed with XP home.

However, from the third day i purchased it, i replaced the OS by Win 2000
professional.

I used 2000 pro for nearly 12 months, everything fine except there was ONE
incident happened in the 11th month.

Incident #1
after i installed office 2000, i went to officeupdate and download Office
2000 SR-1a, a small file downloaded. then i run it, it continue to download
about 1xx MB for the SR-1a update. during this big download, my laptop
suddenly stop response for few seconds, then power-off itself. at that time
i use Wi-Fi. i found that the body of my laptop pretty warm. anyway, i turn
on my laptop again, connect it to LAN and retry download SR-1a via LAN,
everything fine.

Later, for some reasons, i go back to the original pre-installed winXP home.
In the next 5 months, i use Win XP Home.

Then my laptop sometimes over-heated, especially playing game, the fan run
hard but doesn't help. it still power-off itself sometime, just like the
first incident.

someone asked to check power setting, it should be on "laptop" not "always
on" position.
ok, i changed it, now my laptop doesn't over-heated as before and never
power-off itself.

however, this afternoon, i install office 2000 again, then try to download
SR-1a (via wireless), it stop in the middle and power-off itself...

I'm a bit confuse now.
download large file via WiFi = overheated = auto-power off?

And you want to know..........?

Obviously there is a problem with your laptop overheating.

Regardless of what use, gaming, download, disk defragmentation etc the thing
shouldn't get so hot as to shut down.

You may be lucky and find that it is still under warranty...if so call the
maker and get it fixed or replaced.

If not.....good luck.

While you have a heat issue, another suggestion: When running large
software installs, plug the laptop in instead of running off of battery.
Laptop systems turn off/hibernate when battery drops to a certain level.

There is also power management to consider with lengthy downloads. Most do
not register as activity and the system may prematurely go into standby or
suspend. Temporarily change power management settings or play a few rounds
of solitaire while waiting for the download to complete.
