I'm using a crossover cable..

Any help would be appreciated....

You need to have a local account on the laptop. If no local account is
set up, you need to talk to your IT Dept. at work. Not having a local
account on a company domain laptop is a normal security practice.

Log onto your laptop without a network connection.
Set a manual ip address on your LAN connection (requires
administrator privileges).
Connect the twisted cable and set a manual IP on the
other machine (different from your laptop's IP)
Disable all firewalls.
Share a drive on the PC that has the files you want to
copy.
on the target machine, go to Windows explorer and click
on tools/Map a network drive
enter \\[IP address]\Share name
off you go !
