Laptop Memory Configuration

I need to add memory to a friend's old HP Pavillion (ze2000) laptop as it
presently only has 768 mb installed.

Some say the maximum amount the machine will take is 1gb (2 512 sticks) and
some say 2gb (2 1024 sticks)....of course there are two slots.

How do I determine which is correct?

Crucial tends to go with the manufacturer's line.

This claims that 2X1GB, 2GB total, is OK.

One reason to do business with Crucial is their guarantee. (One reason not
to is that their prices are not low.)
