Laptop locks up while in hibernation

I have Win XP Pro on my Dell Latitude laptop. It locks up and won't come
out of hibernation. I have to hard boot it up if I want to use it again.
Any help is appreciated.

Install SP2

What makes you think the OP doesn't have SP2? He didn't give us any
information about what service packs are installed. In any case, just
installing SP2 will not help. The OP needs to determine why the machine
is locking up. It could be anything - overheating (a common problem
with laptops), failing hardware, viruses, etc. We don't have enough
information to troubleshoot this effectively.

Eric - Per my comments above, please go to this site and see what
details you need to include in your next post so you can get focused
help:

Right-click on My Computer and then left-click on Properties (or open
the System applet in Control Panel). You will see the name of your
operating system and Service Pack level there. It will say something
like "Microsoft Windows XP - Service Pack 2".

However, as I previously said, I doubt that getting SP2 if you don't
already have it will do anything to help your laptop's troubles. You
need to find out what is happening. Most definitely you should *not*
install SP2 on a machine that is behaving less than optimally.

Your best course of action might be to take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop - not your local version of
BigStoreUSA. You know your own skill level best.

Other then seek professional help is there something I can do on my own? Is
there a patch I can run? Should I try to update drivers? Any help is
appreciated!

As I said in my first post to you, we don't have enough information to
give you focused help. Your problems could be caused by hardware or
software. There isn't any way for us to tell. You can start by reading
the information here:

Hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP -
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=907477

After that, you can go to Google and use the search term "hibernation
problems + Dell Latitude. You can also search on Dell's support forums
to see if this is a known issue with your particular model.

And as always, you should ask yourself the First Question Of
Troubleshooting: If [function] ever worked, what changed between the
time it stopped working correctly and now?

Most Hibernation problems in XP were brought by SP2, only happen
with 1GB or more, and are fixed by hotfix 909095. The reason is
SP2 made XP unable to update the size of the pagefile.sys file
when RAM is big. So, you may have 1GB or more, so when you added
some load on your system, this triggered the problem.

Details in the Related Message below, and parent and children
ones. In short, call Microsoft and ask "I want the hotfix of
KB909095"; MS will send you a free 2.5MB file that fixes the
problem.

Subject: SOLVED by hotfix KB909095 (Hibernation disappears in
XP if 1GB or more)

The reason: The problem is when you upgrade RAM to high size
(1Gb or 2Gb), XPSP2 fails to enlarge accordingly the
pagefile.sys file; attempts to hibernate fail, either before or
after, and cause Windows to temporarily remove Hibernate from
the Shut Down options - but without alterating your personal
Power Profiles. Restart restores Hibernation - thus your
original profiles.

The fix: the hotfix of KB909095, that will be added in XP-SP3,
and that meanwhile you will get for free by calling Microsoft in
your country (2.5MB). Details below.

You may have Windows XP SP2 with big RAM (at least 1GB). In that
case the 2 related messages below may help (e.g. if ever you
hadn't SP2, then this reply wouldn't apply). In short, call
Microsoft and ask "I want the hotfix of KB909095"; MS will send
you a free 2.5MB file that should fix the problem.
