Laptop does not reconize external usb dvd recorder

I am having a problem with my laptop reconizeing my
fathom dvd recorder. I plug into the usb port and nothing
happens. when I take a plug it into my desktop computer
it is reconized as an additional drve right away. the
laptop as well as the desktop are running windows xp
pro. is there a reason the laptop does not reconize this
fathom dvd drive? I want to use the laptop for making
movie dvd from old films .any answers to my problem?

Have you tried the laptop USB port with any other device? Is it shown
functioning properly in device manager?

yes to all your questions. I have other things pluged
into the usb ports and they work fine. I have checked in
the device manager and everything is functioning no
conflicts.

Try this:

Plug in the device, right click on My Computer, click Manage, click Disk
Management and see if it is listed there. You may need to assign it a
drive letter
