Hi,

This has been a problem since upgrading to sp2, basically i have set up a
network so i can use the internet on my laptop via my main pc.

My main pc can access my laptop shared items printers etc but when i try
accessing my pc from my laptop i get a message "//computername is not
accessible....more text

logon failure: the user has not been granted the request logon type at the
computer"

But the internet works fine!

both machines on xp pro sp2, please help me because ive tried all i know...

On the PC you cannot access,

click Start, click Run, type: net user guest /active:yes (then hit enter
or OK)

Carey

Click Start, click Run, type: secpol.msc (hit enter).

2. Click Local Policies, click User Rights Assignment, click "Access this
computer from the network" and make sure that the Everyone group is
included.

3. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and ensure that the
Everyone group is NOT included. If simple file sharing is enabled, make
sure that the Guest account is NOT included.

Ok pokey, im now getting the message access is denied so thats something ?!?...

your last instruction "If simple file sharing is enabled, make
sure that the Guest account is NOT included" how do i check this?

I appreciate all your help :)

To check if simple file sharing is enabled, just open My Computer, click
Tools, Folder Options and VIEW.

Scroll to the bottom and ensure there is a check next to Use simple file
sharing.

Also, make sure there is no password on the guest account:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
3. Click Guest.
4. Click Reset Password.
5. Click OK without entering a new password.

Carey

nope, still access is denied :(

On XP Pro, click Start, click Run, type:
Regedit (hit enter)

Next, locate HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

Ensure that "RestrictAnonymous" is set to 0.

Close and reboot.

Carey

Did you change restrictanonymoussam or restrictanonymous?

The setting should be at 0. I can't move forward with you from here if you
refuse to go with me.

Carey

Thank you for all your help but it was the correct registry i changed and it
made the situation worse :( ill just cope with it one way for now.

Im sorry, but thanks so much.

Regards

A similar problem occurred for me. Desktop could see laptop but laptop
could not see desktop.

In summary

To set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 for XP, 11 for NT),
perform the following steps: (my XP SP2 setting had been changed to 11)

1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize (or if this registry setting doesn't
exist,
create it of type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 11 for Win2K or NT or
15
for XP, and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer."

Changing value from 11 to 15 fixed things for me.
