language function on a laptop

Hi
I just purchased an hp pavilion notebook computer
I have a friend in Canada, whom I enjoy emailing in the French language
On the desktop, I hold ALT and add a number, eg 138, etc
When I try this on the laptop, I get beeps and it won't add an accented letter to my mail
Can anyone help me? I can't find it in my manual.

Greetings --

You would need to turn on the NumLock, and use _those_ numbers,
for the ASCII characters to work as you're accustomed to.

Did you push just the NumLock key, or use the <Fn>+<NumLock>
combination to fully turn NumLock on?

Without actually looking at how you're laptop's keyboard is
configured, I'm at a dead end. A workable, if much less convenient,
method would be to open the Character Map (Start > Run > Charmap.exe)
and copy/paste the desired character(s) into the document. Still
another method would be to use an external keyboard with the NumLock
enabled. Neither method's ideal, I'm afraid.
