LAN not recognized in Network Connections

On a new WinXP system, the onboard LAN is recognized under Device Manager as
working properly with proper drivers installed. It also has the LED lit when
the the cable is plugged into the RJ45 jack.
But nothing shows up in Network Connections. IPconfig shows the device
present but no IP address assigned.
One error message I've gotten along the way are "RPC Server unavailable."
Other PC's on this network connect fine (all WinXP Home or Pro).
Any ideas?

If this is a new computer, it probably has SP2 installed. SP2 enables
the firewall by default. If you are not using a third party firewall,
go to the Windows Firewall applet in Control Panel and make sure you've
allowed File & Printer Sharing in the Exceptions tab. If you are using
a third-party firewall, disable the Windows Firewall.

Un-install and re-install the LAN adapter in Device Manager.
