Hi All,

I am facing a strange problem with my local area network connection and
dialup connections in Windows XP pro SP2. When I right click my LAN
connection or Dial up and try to take its properties I am thrown an
error message that "an unexpected error has occurred".

My machine is a DELL D610 with on board BroadCom network interface.

I would really appreciate any help in troubleshooting this problem...

Regards,
Aijaz Ahmed

Visit the DELL Homepage and enter your machine's tag. Download and
install the latest drivers for your hardware as well as the LAN
diagnostic utility that you will find there, most likely.

Hi Detlev,

I downloaded all the drivers and the diagnostic utility for my BroadCom
interface card from dells web site, installed them, but the problem is
still the same.. I can obtain the IP address from DHCP but I still can
not get the properties window for my LAN connection or any dialup
connections... The diagnostic utility shows everything as working fine
for my card ...

Appreciate your further help on this

See if there any significant entries in the event viewer.
Start > Run: eventvwr.exe

If there is no clue in the event viewer, perform a repair install:

"How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341

Note that all available Windows updates have to be re-installed after-
wards.
