Lag while online gaming when laptop is connected to network

My setup is this:
1 desktop PC
1 laptop
both are connected to Linksys router for internet and small home network.
Question is since I put the laptop on the network I get intermittent lag when
playing online games such as Battlefield 1942. If I power down the laptop
the lag spikes go away. What would be running on the laptop that keeps
grabbing my bandwith?

also there is no antivirus actively running on the laptop, I start up AVG
and update/scan once a week and i am running windows firewall but maybe there
is a service running that goes out and auto updates iteself?

Sounds like it's your game. If you aren't playing/running it, does the same
thing happen? What exactly does 'lag' mean?

Could be Windows Update, but you can check autoupdates yourself (and it
wouldn't be all the time). Running without resident AV is foolish -
re-enable it.

i have a firewall running and have been scanning once a week for 2 years and
have never had a virus problem.

As far as the lag goes I get a message onscreen saying "Warning connection
problems detected". I will try a few other online games and see if I get
problems with those, that will at least limit it to the specific game.

You're just lucky. Keep your AV software resident. Why wouldn't you?
