L2 cache question

I have a late model motherboard (Intel D865GLC) with a Celeron
processor in it. I am thinking about upgrading it, and the
documentation states that the board supports 512 L2 cache. All of the
chips that I can find for it have 1Mb or 2Mb L2 cache. Will they still
work?

Probably not! Updating the level2cache will also not upgrade the
performance a lot...

No. You require an old style Pentium 4, which are not widely available.

You can occasionally find P4s at yard sales, complete with mobo, HDD,
case, keyboard, CRT....

You want a Northwood by the sounds of things. You can find examples
of the right kind on this page, although their prices may not be competitive
with other sources. Of the top four items shown, one is for FSB400 motherboards,
two for FSB533, one for FSB800 motherboards. All four are Northwood with
512KB cache. So if all other sources dry up, this is an option.

The 865 is a FSB800 product. And in theory, it should be able to
handle a Prescott. In this table, you can see that there are different
revisions of board, so some support Prescott and some don't. If you
can figure out the revision info, maybe in fact you have more options.

The instructions on that page, say to check the "AA number", as depicted
in this image.

Somehow I doubt that, but thanks for the vote of confidence :)
Plenty of lurkers out there are ready to answer questions.
I just beat them to it.
