hello everyone,
I am a win2k user.

Hardware:
I have 2 computers (comp1 and comp2) But one monitor, connected with a KVM
Switch.

Today:
Comp2 switched off. Working only with comp1, on a word document. Suddenly
monitor turned off. No, Not power settings in the computer. I turned off
comp1 and tried a restart. Didnt work. tried with comp2, monitor works well.

Unplugged monitor cable and plugged again.

now comp1 detects the monitor. But i see that the document i was working on
is erased from the disk. Infact there is not even a single file that i have
created since the last graceful shutdown. But i had saved my doc, many
times. So i should have atleat some part of it. What appeared to be a simple
monitor or KVM switch problem turned out to be a disk problem. the file is
completely erased from disk. Does any one have any ideas, as what could have
been the problem??

Note: I have saved the doc a hundred times. So i dont expect the file to
just disappear, as if it never existed. (even though the restart wasnt
graceful enough)

Thanks for your time
Prakash

Well, i'm likely to conclude you have a virus. It
shoudn't be a monitor problem if you plugged the monitor
in each computer directly, and it worked. As for the kvm,
i highly doube it really has anything to do with it,
unless the one switch is messed up (meaning it only works
in one setting i.e. comp 2) all the kvm does is switch
where the keyboard, mouse, and monitor redceive/send
infromation from/to. If anything, you might have some
virus that wipes out "new" information. that's really the
only way that you can lose info that's been saved. or
maybe it's just hidden, and you can't access it.

that's just my 2 cents

My KVM switch instructions caution that power must be off on both
computers when the device is installed lest the switch stop working.
In fact, mine stopped working on one system after I had done some
recabling. The cure was to power down everything and reinstall the switch.
