About:
KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic
hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI
devices, and other peripherals. It can be used as a Linux demo,
educational CD, rescue system, etc. It is not necessary to install
anything on a hard disk due to on-the-fly decompression.

Changes:
This is an experimental 3.3 prerelease. Kernel 2.4.22 with xfs and HIGHMEN
(4GB) support is included. cloop 1.02 (block layer rewrite). katomic was
reinstalled, since it got lost somehow in the past release. New unofficial
development boot options were added for testing: toram and tohd=hda1,
which copy the CD to RAM or hard disk and runs from there. A "gprs" option
was added to pon to provide GPRS Internet access.

Release focus: N/A

Somehow, you are too fast!

But at least I have this:

Other Knoppix flavours:

2003-09-08 • GNOPPIX 0.5 released: http://www.gnoppix.org/download.html
What is GNOPPIX exactly?
GNOPPIX is a linux live cd similar to KNOPPIX which includes a complete
GNOME desktop environment.

ClusterKnoppix http://bofh.be/clusterknoppix/#download
is a modified Knoppix distro using the OpenMosix kernel.
* OpenMosix terminal server - uses PXE, DHCP and tftp to boot linux
clients via the network.
* No cdrom drive/harddisk/floppy needed for the clients
* openMosix autodiscovery - new nodes automatically join the cluster (no
configuration needed)
* Cluster Management tools - openMosix userland/openMosixview Every node
has root access to every other node via ssh/RSAkeys
* MFS/dfsa support
* Every node can run full blown X (PC-room/demo setup) or console only
(more memory available)

The Quantian Scientific Computing Environment
http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/quantian.html
A Knoppix / Debian variant tailored to numerical and quantitative analysis.
Quantian is an extension of Knoppix and clusterKnoppix from which it
takes its base system of about 2.0 gigabytes of software, along with
fully automatic hardware detection and configuration.

GNOPPIX is a linux live cd similar to KNOPPIX which includes a complete
GNOME desktop environment.

I downloaded it and burned it to CD;it works great and is beautiful to
behold, except that I (and others judging from their project pages) could
not get the English language option to work. A little more documentation on
the website and a way to get it to boot up in the English would make this a
really nice live CD. If anybody has had any luck getting the creadiv
lang=en option to work please post here. Thanks.

Thanks for these extra links. There is a customisation kit available for
the Knoppix Distribution so I guess we can expect more. I believe there
is also one optimised for running an Internet radio station!

Me too :)

I have to admit being a Linux virgin but successfully installed Knoppix just
last friday! I had an old IBM P3 500mHz with a 10G disk doing nothing so I
wiped it clean and used a certain partition manager (oh how I love that
program!!) to visually create two linux partitions. After that I followed
the advice given at http://www.crouse.ws/knoppix.html and to my amazement
everything installed fine. Have to admit it is actually easier to install
Knoppix than any version of Winwoes!

If anyone is interested, there is a new iso image for Gnoppix available for
download: 0.5.4-1 which fixes the problem of not being able to boot up the
English language version. By pressing F2 at the boot screen you can enter
credativ lang=en/us to get English language and U.S. Keyboard.

Now if installing and removing programs in Knoppix could be just as simple.
I wonder, if we had to compile most Winwoes programs then maybe Digital
Research GEM would have been the dominant O/S? Evenually the intricacies of
Linux will be second-nature to me. Thank you Blinky.

2003-09-08 ? GNOPPIX 0.5 released

Just an FYI ... For anyone who is on dialup or can't make an
ISO CD, you can get the CD shipped to your door for $10 or
less from places like CheapBytes (.com).

My experience using Knoppix is great. Had to install a PCMCIA
because Knoppix would not drive my Winmodem (combined with
sound card.) Also, I modified it so things like DUN/ISP
settings would load and save to floppy disk. Lots of helpful
info is on the knoppix.net site in the forums.

For those interested in experimenting with free, bootable
Linux distros, a smaller bootable Linux is Puppy Linux that
can be booted a variety of ways, including ... from a cheap
solid state USBSTOR device through the USB port. An entire
Linux distribution - including data - on your keychain. This
makes it possible to use a company PC on the road for personal
browsing and mail and not even touch the hard drive.

My pleasure. Re installations -- I don't know Knoppix at all; it won't
like some other distros, do rpms? (Prepackaged installs like you're
used to.)
