I push "Delete" on several cells and instead of deleting
the data in the selected cells, reacts as if I clicked on
copy or cut. How can I fix this?

When I hit the Shift-Delete key, I get the the marquee (dancing ants) and I've
cut that selection.

Maybe your shift key is sticking.
