Keylogger, Trojan Virus

R

Roger Cox

I am using Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 8250 computer.
I use Norton Antivirus with the latest virus defination
installed.

When I scan C: drive it detects a Keylogger, Trojan virus
in C:\window\system32\StEALtH.dll. The virus software
says, "...non cleanable and cannot delete". What can I do
to remove this virus? I connected to Midwest Micro and
ran their free virus scan. It detected 7 other virus
infectd files, but did not detect the Keylogger, Trojan
virus.

Norton Antirus say my system is still infected with the
above virus. Any suggestion as to how to remove the
virus, or do I have to reformat the hard drive?

I'd try to boot to safe mode and see if you can deltete
the stealth.dll from there. If not, are you running NTSF
or FAT32? If FAT32, boot to the DOS prompt off of a
bootable floopy and see if you can deltete it from DOS.

Get rid of Norton AntiVirus and install McAfee. Not
trying to take sides, but I've seen too many virus's that
Norton misses.

McAfee has a free online scanner too. Try it and see what
it says. www.mcafee.com. On the right side of the page
is a link to "Scan Now".

Hope this helps. Post back any results.

There is a thing called a "Stealth DLL Injection" which isn't a virus but a
legitimate application to achieve DLL injection for hooks, subclassing and
other advanced programming concepts. Of course, that doesn't mean that
someone didn't do something evil with it.

Keep Norton, it's the best personal antivirus product out there, better than
McAfee by a long shot (which often falls down and dies, or lists advertising
as a critical update!).
