keybord error

my keyboard backspace button has stopped working. when i try and backspace
all that happens is that a sign appears like this [ and i cannot delete it
any more. also my return key once pressed goes down a line and enters this
symbol #. also if i try and enter the at symbol in an internet program it
minimizes the page. the only way i can delete something is if i highlight the
text and prees the button that says delete on it not the backspace button.
need help urgently. thx.
