Keyboard problem

Gemma

I have just bought a brand new computer and am having
trouble with the apostrophe/quotation mark key. When I
press it (in any program) it does not show up on the
screen until I press the another key, then they both
appear at once. I have tried the keyboard on a different
computer and this problem does not occur, therefore I
assume it must be a software (probably Windows XP Home)
problem. Any suggestions as to how to fix this annoyance
are welcome! Thanks, Gemma

The problem you trying to describe has nothing to do with the physical
keyboard itself. It is merely a question of what do you want your keyboard
to do. The keys on your keyboard, as you describe it, are called 'dead'
keys, they only react on the next keypress. In foreign languages its
function expands to charcters like: äëö or àèò or even áéó or worse âêô.
These keys are not present on a 'British' or US keyboard. So, the dead key
pressed first and then the actual character 'a' produces the character á. To
solve your 'problem' the settings of your keyboard need to be altered. Go to
the Language/Country settings in your configuration. Click on the tab
Languages, click on details and select the proper keyboard (US or British).
I am using a Dutch Windows XP, so the guiding might be a bit confusing.
However if you want the keyboard to do both, regular and expanded functions,
then use [ALT]+[SHIFT] to switch keyboards between the selected functions on
the fly.
Good luck, Dolphe
