I have just started to use the task facility in Outlook. When I try to type
a £ sign I get a # instead. Some of my other key create different characters
too. I only have this problem in Outlook, all of my other applications are
OK. Does anyone know how to rectify this?

Make sure only the correct keyboards are configured for Windows;
Control Panel-> Regional and Language Options-> tab Languages-> button
Details...
