Hi,
I just got a new sony vaio laptop and it seems to be working fine.
However, when i try to type in the \ symbol, it displays = and when i
try to type in | it displays +. I have tried to change all the
keyboards defaults etc, but to no avail.

All the other keys work fine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Mark

Your message properties show -0800 GMT. So you're in the US or Canada?

Check that you have English (United States) or English (Canada).

Keyboard Language...

Windows XP defaults to US English.

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Regional and Language Options |
Languages tab | Details button | Settings tab |

Or...

Start | Run | Type: intl.cpl | Click OK |
Languages tab | Details button | Settings tab |

Default input language
[[Specifies the default language that you use to insert text. The default
language is used every time you start or log on to your computer.
For example, if you insert text in German most of the time, but have also
added English as an input language, select German as your default language.
When you want to insert text in English, you can switch to that language.
A language must be added under Installed services to be available as a
default.]]

You would appear to be in Eastern Ontario or maybe just inside Quebec.. your
time zone is set incorrectly, as is your keyboard layout.. go to Control
Panel and visit two areas.. you will need Regional and Language for your
keyboard woes, and Date/Time to get you onto the same page as the rest of
Ontario.. :-)

Apologies if you are not in Ontario, btw, but your IP would suggest that you
are..

Is this another OEM unappropriate install I wonder?

It seems sorta minimalistically important that timezone, keyboard &
default language are set in the OS BEFORE delivery (you won;t believe
how many times I encounter this)

Deebs

I have come across more than a few computers where the manufacturers had
made claims that all would be set up and ready to go,, having said that, it
is also not unknown for Canadians to buy a system that includes a US English
keyboard, and then to dump that in favour of their already owned Canadian
French keyboard..
