Keyboard Oddity - No Numpad

I'm sure this is probably a dumb question, but I really have never seen
this before and I'm stumped. I have a clint with an XP Pro box, and
numlock doesn't enable the num keypad. These is a soft beep (different
tones for on and off), the led goes on but numlock still does nothing.
I'm *sure* its software related (XP or 3rd party), as the kb works fine
on other machines.
Any Ideas ?

And is it enabled in the BIOS?

Oh yeah - its not hardware. I used a knoppix boot cd to bring the
machine up to specifically test that and the numpad worked just fine.
Its just on this installation of XP.
