Keyboard characters have gone awry

Gateway laptop w/ Vista Premium. Demons have taken over my keyboard and are
messing with my head.

The colon :)) types as a dash (-), the "P" types as an asterisk (*), and I
don't know what else because I stopped to post this for help. I don't have a
clue what changed or how.

I have work to do and am at a standstill over this as I don't want to mess
up what I am in the middle of. Please help.

Thanks,

SAVE YOUR WORK - NOW ...

odd things happen, maybe a reboot will fix it, if not it may be
something changed your keyboard map but simplest things first, can you
borrow another keyboard to try? (Assuming you can use another with that
machine of course).

In Control Panel > Regional and Language Options, On the Keyboard and
Languages tab, click on Change Keyboards. Under "Installed services", what
keyboard is listed? For example, is it English (United States) > Keyboard

Thanks guys, I saved work then rebooted but nothing changed. Then I noticed
these were the characters of the numlock "on". I switched it off and it is
OK again.

Thing is I absolutely did not switch numlock to "on" nor is it likely I
could have done it by mistake since it takes two very disparate keys to make
it functional.

Demons is all I can think of.
