In all seriousness, what are the key words and phrases that will generate
the most or quickest answers in this group? I posted what I thought was a
concise question with steps taken to try and fix it and was looking for some
help. Here it is 20 hours later and nothing. There are posting that received
answers in under 5 minutes from multiple people.

Please let me know their secret so I can use it to get some answers.

Thank you,

Well I don't think it is "word or phraes." It may just be that your issue was not specific enough for anyone to take a stab at it. What often happens is people will post an issue that is so generic there is really not much that can be said about it other than "I don't know." You don't want to read that I'm sure.

Below is the original message that did not get any responses. It seems
pretty precise to me. If this is the wrong group let me know which one I
should post to. If this is the right one, the floor is open to anyone that
wants to take a stab at this.

Hello, here is the problem. I have two desktop and one laptop computer and
cable access to the internet, all have latest updates and service packs
installed. One of the desktops is wireless. The wired desktop and the laptop
do not seem to be able to connect to the internet on their own anymore. When
I turn them on everything is fine and the network connection in the system
tray shows that they are connected to the network, but clicking on internet
explorer gets me the ³server not found² page. As a workaround I wrote a
quick batch file to renew the ip address and put it in the startup folder.
This works but there has to be some reason that it all of a sudden stopped
working. And why does the internet work on the wireless without having to
renew as with the wired computers?

Thanks for your help

Yeah I saw this a little bit ago. Trouble is we know nothing about how you retrieve your IP; nothing about how you get the IP to the other machines; we do not know what your network topology is; we don't know if you have any events in the Event Viewer on the machines that have to have their IPs refreshed; basically here is what you said:

I have three machines. All talking to each other. One gets its IP fine. The other two don't. Help.

It would be my first reaction to contact your ISP and see what they say about it.

a question as an answer is still an answer. now i know what you need.

internet access - cable modem

: wireless desktop
:
modem->wireless router->wired desktop
\
wired laptop

i have set all to dhcp. the laptop is not connected all the time but the
desktop is. the wireless connects via dhcp.

and this is what the event viewer had to say

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1003
Date: 5/1/2004
Time: 8:15:10 AM
User: N/A
Computer: KNELSON
Description:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the
DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address xxxxxxxxxxxx. The
following error occured:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to
try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
Data:
0000: 79 00 00 00 y...

it started about 6-8 weeks ago when my wife said she could not get online.
before that, for the last year or so, it was as simple as turning on the
computer and clicking on the icon.
hope that is better. and remember, questions can still be answers

Are you using a DHCP server to the machine thay gave you that error? If that machine's DHCP server is not under your control then make sure the TCP\IP properties there are set receive an IP address automatically from a DHCP server. Because that is where it is expecting to receive it's IP address.

ok, i checked the router and i checked the properties of the laptop and the
desktop. all are set to receive an IP address automatically via dhcp. i
sometimes take the laptop to work and the same thing happens there so i do
not think it is the router. is there anyway for the settings to change from
loading service packs or updates? i had enough of a headache in getting the
whole network to work that i try not to even think of the settings. meaning
that i did not change anything before this started acting up.
