Keeps shutting down from login screen

I have been trying to cleanup the kids computer and I have hit a real snag.
Explorer was almost useless because of all the popups. so I deleted all the
cookies and temporary internet files using the Tools/Internet Options. Then
I downloaded AdAware and tried to run it. After a minute or so of scanning,
I kept getting a error that said it was a Remote Procedure Call something or
other from NT Authority\System and would
restart in 30 sec. Ii managed to delete all of the problems that were
scanned to that point and then it restarted. I then ran adaware again and
got rid of a few more before it restarted. At some point, it quit telling
me it was going to shut down and I was able to finish the scan and deleted
all of the other 858 critical objects. Not kidding, this was loaded up with
crap. After rebooting, now it won't let me log in. It goes to Welcome
window and I can click on user or
administrator in normal or safe mode and it just starts to log on and
immediately logs me off. A virus?? How can I get rid of it when it won't
let me log on and get to Windows? Is there a DOS type program that can help
me?
Thanks
Bill

Looks exactly like what I need. Thank you very much. One question
though....what is the built-in administrative password?

You can probably leave it blank.

That worked. Thanks again. Now I have a new problem. Since I did all
that, I can no longer connect to the Internet. My MB has a built in network
plug and it used to work just fine. I tried putting in PCI network card,
same thing. It will not let my cable modem system assign an IP address. It
just goes to the default Windows IP. What did I do? How do I fix? Last
time this happened on another PC, I had to replace the junk Netgear network
card (never did work)with a good one (3Com). But this one did work at one
time.
Thanks

And I do have another question about activating XP. How many times can it
be activated? I suppose it was activated when new, I activated it once
after a HD format and reinstall and now I have installed a new MB. The
third time, I tried to activate and had to talk to a real person at
Microsoft and expain why I was activating again. I have this horrible
thought that I will be reformatting and reinstalling XP if these agrivating
little things, (probably from too much spyware, etc) keep popping up. After
a new format and clean install, I will this time put more protection on and
download SP2. Will they hassle me again about activating or is it three
strikes, and I'm out!!

You can reactivate Windows XP as many times as you like.

OEM versions can be reactivated on the same machine as many times as you
like, retail can be transferred and reactivated on new machines as many
times as you like as long as you uninstalled it from the previous machines.

You obviously had to reactivate within 120 days of activating it once - that
should be the only time you have to use the phone method.

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is there ever a
charge. If it's been more than 120 days since you last activated
that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to activate via
the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you might have to
make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

Geez you are a genius. That fixed it. Thanks again. I hope you don't get
tired of my problems. I am now going to install SP2 and take advantage of
the firewall and pop-up stopper. I will download the Spyware Blaster and
the AdAware to try to battle the crap out there. And probably McAfee
Antivirus.
