Keeping desktop icons in position

Is there a way to keep the desktop icons where they have been put by a
user? After a change of resolution or sometimes just a change in the
display, the icons realign themselves in alphabetical order down the
left side.

What am I missing?

Many thanks.

Right Click on an empty area on your desktop. When the menu comes up move to
the "Arrange Icons by" entry. Another menu should popup next to it. On
this second menu , "Auto Arrange" should have a tick beside it. Moe to this
entry and click on it. The tick will disappear. Now your icons should stay
where you put them.

You might also want to remove the tick from the "Align to grid" entry in the
second menu.
