Keepalive for Screen Saver?

I find several lengthy processes, such as a long internet download hang
when the power saving component of my screen saver, settable in the
display part of the control panel --- blanks out the screen. It does this,
somewhat independently of other power saving settings, if it does not
detect keyboard or mouse activity for a while.

Are there any keepalive programs that can prevent this, so I do not
have to restart my long download, long virus scan, etc. etc. ?
