I am using Vista Business x64 and these two Windows updates will NOT
install. I get an error 80073712 when trying to install them. This
is on a clean install with no A/V or anything else running. Has
anybody else ran into this? I am trying out the x64 version on my
laptop and this is somewhat discouraging. I have them both disabled
under Windows Update settings right now, but I am not comfortable with
this until this is resolved. Any help would be most appreciated,
thanks!

Have you looked up what the updates are on google? One is an update for how
windows mail handles the news server and the other one fixes a problem where
unprivileged users can access local files & folders.
What happened when you downloaded the updates & tried to manually install
them?

I get the exact same errors in the event log. I really don't care
about the Windows Mail update, but the other one is important and
needs to be addressed. Google'd the errors but did not find anything
that would suggest a solution - or even that someone else has had the
problem for that matter.
