KB938194 causes windows Vista Ultimate to fail on bootup

I would advise creating a system restore point before installing this update.

I installed KB938194 performance update and windows vista ultimate failed to
boot. I was unable to get into safe mode or safe mode with networking.

Windows vista would just sit there with the progress bar and not do
anything. Hard drive wasn't working and I let it sit there for a good 15
minutes.

I was able to get back into windows by booting off the dvd, running repair,
which runs the system restore from there. Very cool idea by the way MS. It
saved the day.

I would hope this won't happen when the real deal pops up in windows update.
Any ideas on what caused this? I'll check for unsigned drivers but i checked
dxdiag and did not have any.

I wonder if there is anything in the event logs.

Thanks!

It's a new vista install. I didn't do anything to it.

I did not activate it yet though. Only because i'm not sure if I want to use
64bit or 32bit yet i'm also testing the stability of it. ya know vista
incompatibilities. Found one already so. Maybe thats the cause? vista not
being activated yet.

I checked the drivers via dxdiag and it didn't report any unsigned driver
problems.

Well here's my set up.

asus p4b deluxe/wifi
using onboard sound
4gb of ram
core 2 duo 2.4ghz
msi geforce 7900gt 256mb video card
haupauge 1800 pci-express tv tuner card

I honestly not sure what it could be.

Thanks for responding I appreciate it. Sorry for the late response.

Activation shouldnt cause this behavior. Do you have anything else running
(like AV) when you are installing the updates? I am wondering if there is
something getting quarantined during the update installation.

I had a similar experience with a different update - KB941649, and so did
several other people who have posted here and elsewhere.

Thanks for the info.

I have seen a few of these now, doesnt really seem to be update specific so
nailing them down is going to be a chore. I will see what I can do though.

May I add that I have run into the same problem with Ultimate, French

restore from a Ghost image.

Understood, I have seen a few threads on this and will try to start
gathering data as to whats happening so we can get a gameplan on how to
keep this from happening.

maybe this is why I have the same problem listed in Vista general discussion
group, but trying to repair from disk says I have to specify drive etc, but
doesn't give option. I don't know what screen I went to but it only listed
external drives as hard disk and didn't see C drive in spite of HP
diagnostics saying it was ok

That is interesting. I did not think it could be an AV.

I do have trend micro Pc-cillin internet security 2007 installed and was
running during the update.

I'll look in the logs to see if that occurred.

This coming weekend I'll disable the AV and try the update again. I'm not to
worried because I know I can run system restore from the dvd. Great idea!

Oh ya ...

I should also mention that I had to install a hotfix. KB933049 is the
hotfix. This fixed my problem with me not being able to stream mpeg videos
through my xbox 360 via media center. That is probably the only odd thing on
my machine though. Without the hotfix when I try to play a mpeg video on my
xbox it get a video error. I doubt that helps but you never know.

I just checked the quarantine and did not have anything there. I'll still
try it out this weekend with AV disabled and let you know.
