KB834707 Problem

G

Guest

Automatic Updates brought in a new security update on a Windows XP SP2 Dell
Lattitude D600 notebook PC on October 13. KB834707 installed and now the PC
gives an error message related to SHLWAPI.DLL -- after clicking OK, all you
see is the mouse pointer (it still moves), but the desktop never comes up.
Powering off is the only way out.

Uninstalling KB834707 resolved the problem temporarily -- the next day,
Automatic Updates brought in KB834707 again and same problem. This time,
KB834707 can not be uninstalled (file not found).

Is there a permanent fix available?

After pushing SP2 out with SUS, we have seen approximately 30% of our
machines experiencing this same problem. I have since removed SP2 from SUS.
REpairs and recoveries all fail. Only solution that seems to work is to
reload XP on machine.

These are plain vanilla machines, laptops and desktops. I've never seen a
SP cause more destruction. Anyone seen anything legitimate as to why this is
happening?

Hi

Most likely caused by an incomplete Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
installation.

More here:

You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry
point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library
Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update

Torgeir:

Thank you! Your information was right on the money. After I did an XP
repair, then reapply XP SP2 from a admin download, I let WindowsUpdate apply
all Critical updates (including 834707) and everything is fine now.

I really appreciate your time and effort to respond to my post.

I am unable to deinstall these patches, exactly how did you do a repair
to fix the problem...

Thanks,
Carmine
