We've applied KB 841382 on several systems experiencing
performance problems, but we still see IExplore, in
particular, utilizing 100% of the CPU. I have a
supposition that several services (our MCafee av software,
the mindows media player service, the plug and play
service) are continuing to restart. We're seeing errors
in the application log from some of these services during
the time when IE is trashing the CPU.

McAfee is notorious for causing issues with IE. It loads extensions in IE
that can cause problems:
=============================
To disable these:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Clear the checkbox for "Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

If this works, then you can proceed to delete the one(s) causing the problem
To delete them:
- Run Regedit
- Entries for browser extensions will be found in the below key.
Export and delete the suspect ones.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions
