I got an alert a few minutes ago from Update about a new patch, which I
assumed was the ANI bug fix. Downloaded it and installed it; computer would
not restart. After the repair routine, tried to restart again with no luck.
Second time through, Vista Home Premium reverted to an earlier repair point
and I could restart.

This patch is again waiting for download, but I'm not sure I want to try it
right away until I get some thoughts on what may be going on. I'm using a
Gateway laptop with Home Premium OEM -- the computer is less than a month
old, and doesn't yet have much of anything loaded except for what came with
the original package. Firefox 2 is the only major exception.

MS doesn't seem to have its Web links on this issue very well in order yet.
Trying to find the text of this KB article has been unsuccessful. From the
Update pages, I seem to get into a circular loop of URLs, none of which are
the text. At one point, today's patch is described as "important" and
concerning the GDI. I assume that stands for graphics display interface and
indeed refers to the animated cursor problem. But elsewhere, the patch has
been described by MS as "critical."

Anybody else struggling to install this patch?

I guess I'm not at high risk because I use Firefox by default and IE7 only
for updates, but given the publicity about how nasty this problem could be,
I'd rather get it installed as soon as I can.

Thanks for any advice.

Mine went ahead on both the dv5094 and dv9288 Hp laptops without a problem.

Not sure what this could be?

Yes, I'm having problems with this one. See my earliet post below (or above,
depending on how you've set up your news client). It's subject is KB925902,

FYI:

Vista does not receive updates via IE. If you don't want to use IE7 then
you do not have to. One less app to worry about.

I received a 'failed' for that update and posted a thread here re that.

I have also had other problems with other Updates. At the very least,
you're not alone.

Not having the computer restart would make me a tad nervous but so far all
I've rec'd is error messages.

There is an issue with Realtek HD Audio on XP boxes with this fix,
MSFT issued a hotfix for this which addresses some other unspecified
issues as well. Did not have a problem on my Vista Box or XP but
installed it on several machines today to cure Audio Streaming issues
in XP

Hotfix is and info is here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448

No idea weather it has any impact on Vista - sorry - but it has caused
a few issues with XP.

An update, so to speak - in View Update History I see that Security Update
for Windows (KB925902) has been installed ___but___ it does not appear in
the Installed Updates list. Also, Windows is again telling me that I need
to install two updates, one is Security Update for Windows Vista (KB925902).

Damn, I thought I had this one update behind me.

I have been receiving personal support from MS re two Update problems I
have. My problem was passed on to a higher level (or different dept.) and
the set of instructions I just rec'd was to Hide those two updates. That's
certainly a way around all of this.
