K8V-X sound driver

This board came with no driver disk in the box. The sound driver on the
ASUS site does not work, says it is not the right hardware. It is supposed
to be the AD1980 SoundMax. Everest says it is a VIA AC'97. The VIA driver
installs but the sound is barely audible with volume all the way up.
The Marvell NIC driver did not work either but I found an old one that
works.
First problem I have had with ASUS after about 10 other boards.

Thanks for any advice,
willimx

It is the first time I have ever heard of an ASUS board coming without a
drivers disc.
I would have returned the bloody thing as an incomplete package.

When you go to the support.asus.com page and look for downloads,
don't forget to click the "driver" button at the top of
the page, to get a complete list. For example, there is this
(fairly old) 19MB download:

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ad1980/WDM_3663.zip

Uninstall whatever other driver you've been trying before installing
it.

Sound driver support, is by codec type (like your AD1980, as seen
in the PDF manual, in the picture of the motherboard), and is
also a function of the chipset on the motherboard. The WDM_3663.zip
download, in the SMAXWDM folder, has a .INF file "smwdmVI3.inf".
In there is a declaration of the chipsets supported. The 0x8086
ones are Intel chipsets, and the 0x1106 ones are for VIA.

A master list of Vendor/Device info is here:

http://www.pcidatabase.com/reports.php?type=tab-delimeted

If you scroll down to "1106 VIA Technologies Inc" and then
drop further down to 3059, you can see that VIA has been using
the same AC97 identifier for quite a few of their Southbridges.
So, whenever looking at potential driver packages, check to
make sure the .inf file mentions the device identification of
the Southbridge on your board. That is how the installation
knows to install or not.

And don't let the age of the driver file fool you - if it works
properly, there is no reason for Analog Devices to be releasing
new versions.

Thanks Paul. That did the trick using the older drivers.
